Each and every day I seem to come across another inspiring and fascinating piece of science that upends collectively held beliefs about human health consciousness and well being.
This latest piece refers to work I’ve been following out of the HeartMath Institute that is providing insight into the intelligence of the human heart, its magnetic field, and what all of this has to do with our overall wellbeing and access to intuition.
Starting with the concept of heart coherence HeartMath has provided a profound way of measuring the effects of our mental and emotional states on our bodies and ultimately our lives.
Heart coherence refers to a state of optimal functioning where the heart, mind, and emotions are in harmonious alignment. This state is characterized by a smooth, ordered rhythm in heart rate variability (HRV) – the variation in time intervals between consecutive heartbeats. A coherent heart rhythm reflects efficient communication between the heart and brain, promoting emotional stability, mental clarity, and improved health.
This harmony also produces incredible energy efficiency for us as humans as we exist in a state of least internal effort to provide life. Further, coherent heart fields can be felt by others around us, and it can even impact their state of being in positive ways as well.

The Heart-Brain Connection
Central to HeartMath’s research is the understanding of the bidirectional communication between the heart and brain. In fact, the heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart.
The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a critical role in this heart-brain dialogue. The ANS comprises the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, which regulate the body’s stress and relaxation responses. Heart coherence enhances the balance between these two branches, fostering a state of autonomic harmony. This balance is crucial for maintaining health and resilience against stress and also gives us a substantial boost in overall performance physically, spiritually, emotionally and mentally.
Techniques to Achieve Heart Coherence
HeartMath offers various techniques to develop heart coherence. These are based on practices that have been around for thousands of years, and now through science we’ve been able to not just feel but also prove that they are effective in achieving coherence. One of the most effective methods is the Quick Coherence Technique, which involves focused breathing and the generation of positive emotions.
- Heart-Focused Breathing: This step involves breathing slowly and deeply while focusing attention on the heart area. This practice alone can help shift the nervous system into a more balanced state.
- Activation of Positive Emotions: The next step is to activate a positive feeling, such as appreciation or love, while maintaining heart-focused breathing. Positive emotions have been shown to create a more coherent heart rhythm, facilitating a state of harmony between the heart and brain.
The Science of Intuition
Intuition, as described by HeartMath, is an inner knowing or direct perception of truth without the involvement of logical reasoning. According to HeartMath, intuition is closely linked to the heart and the state of coherence.
(Update May 2024: I am about to release a workshop on developing true intuition. If you are interested, stay in touch here to be the first to know.)
Types of Intuition
Intuition can be a tough thing to navigate as there is often a lot of noise in our awareness that can hinder our ability to listen to clear internal signal. Further, intuition can be broken down into a number of categories. Some intuition is driven by our internal mental database that provides a ‘gut’ decision or answer to something based on previous experience.
There is also intuition, in a sense, that can come from our emotional state or even build up of survival stress. This form of intuition can sometimes be accurate but often inaccurate. While it’s coming from within us, i.e. intuition, it is driven by survival or fear at times. An example of this might be when someone feels someone is dangerous simply because of the way they look or what they remind us of, even if they are not dangerous. Their thoughts and body produce ideas and emotions convincing us this person must be dangerous because we FEEL it, but in fact this experience is arising from something else like our past perhaps. This makes discernment very important.
Finally, we can also refer to intuition as something that comes from outside ourselves or another form of energetic sensitivity.
Often the word intuition is used interchangeably for these scenarios, but this isn’t ideal as they are all very different. Here is how HeartMath breaks down intuition.
- Implicit Knowledge: This type of intuition involves the subconscious assimilation of information through past experiences and learning. It is often referred to as “gut feeling.”
- Energetic Sensitivity: This form of intuition is the ability to sense information from the environment through the body’s energetic field. The heart, with its powerful electromagnetic field, plays a central role in this sensitivity.
- Nonlocal Intuition: Nonlocal intuition refers to the ability to access information beyond the boundaries of time and space. It is the most profound form of intuition, often experienced as sudden insights or knowing without prior knowledge.
HeartMath’s research suggests that a state of heart coherence enhances intuitive abilities. When the heart is in a coherent state, the communication between the heart and brain is optimized, making it easier to access intuitive insights.
HeartMath has also conducted numerous studies to investigate the relationship between heart coherence and intuition. In one study, participants were able to predict future outcomes better when they were in a state of coherence compared to when they were not. This finding supports the idea that coherence facilitates access to intuitive information.
Real World Implications & Applications
For me, positively impacting our collective through my work is key. HeartMath’s work provides a number of interesting ways where we can embody these learnings and practices to better our world. Here are a few ways their work is already being used in the ‘real world.’
- Healthcare & Police: Heart coherence techniques are used to reduce stress, enhance emotional regulation, and improve patient outcomes. By promoting autonomic balance, these practices help patients recover more effectively and maintain better health. This has also been implemented in some police stations creating a better relationship between police and community, and reducing the stress police officers face.
- Education: Coherence techniques can enhance students’ emotional resilience, focus, and academic performance. Educators trained in HeartMath methods report improved classroom environments and better student engagement.
- Business: Leaders and employees use heart coherence practices to manage stress, improve decision-making, and foster a positive organizational culture. Coherence helps individuals remain calm and clear-headed in high-pressure situations, leading to more effective leadership and teamwork.
- Personal Transformation & Consciousness Expansion: On a personal level, heart coherence techniques empower individuals to manage their emotions, enhance their well-being, and tap into their intuitive abilities. By cultivating coherence, people can navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and resilience. Further, these practices bring people into a deeper relationship with themselves, increasing the amount of consciousness they have on a day to day basis.
I suspect that over time HeartMath’s work will continue to grow. As collective consciousness around this stuff changes, and it’s no longer in the unfair judgement of ‘pseudoscience,’ it will be adopted more widely.
Who doesn’t want to feel better and perform better? Not many people. As people experience the differences from these practices and the science makes its way into mainstream thought, it will be hard to hold back.
Imagine the type of world we would have if all of us were coherent most of the time?
