I write this as I have decided to share some thoughts on things I’ve experienced, learned, observed and felt over the years of being involved in “spiritual” or self-help communities. There’s a couple of helpful distinctions to be made that can give us a greater understanding of what is trying to be achieved in these circles and with that understanding, transformation can happen more effectively.
My main intention here is not to call anyone out nor put anyone down, I simply feel there is a lot that can be learned from this and ultimately there is a lot of self empowerment that can come out of this. Try to check out this whole article and please don’t miss my final point. I believe we actually have a big challenge on our hands here and it needs to be clear.
The Misconceptions
Creating an organization like CE can sometimes cause people to create misconceptions about you. At times people can put you in a box especially when a lot of the content produced is done online and people can’t actually meet you. We’ve been called “new age,” “woo’eys,” “hippies,” “super spiritual people,” and anything else that can be related to some identity.
To be honest and transparent, I sometimes cringe at the idea of being boxed or labelled as being in the ‘new age spiritual’ community because of how it can be. It’s not so much what others would think, but more so the stigma that automatically gets put on myself or my work (CE).
Funny thing I’ve found is when people meet me, they are surprised. Why? Because they find out that the work I do here isn’t about an identity or fitting into a box, but instead just about a passion and living my truth as pure as I know how, as I continue to grow.
One of the most interesting things I’ve observed over the years is that regardless of how much information there is out there online, in books or at seminars, it seems we are able to read it, memorize it and spit it back out, but we have a very tough time truly living it. Even social media websites, can give us the ability to make it appear as though we are fully living these ideals but in actuality are not.
Before we move on, I wish I didn’t have to use the word spiritual or spirituality as I believe there are so many misconceptions about it that the word is completely lost, but for lack of a better word, I’m going to use it. To me, spirituality refers to our relationship with nature, life, ourselves, each other and our world. This is not a religious thing with rules and dogmas, it’s simply exploring various relationships. I do feel we have a soul or higher self, this for me is from experience and exploring science. We can explore that a bit more later.
My intention here is to simply make observations that can be helpful for us to reflect. I’ve had the opportunity to work in the thick of the ‘spiritual’ movement for 5+ years now and have seen a lot and spoken to many people. Patterns emerge that tell a story, and I wish to share some of that story today. What I intend to share are things that I feel holds many of us back from connecting with the rest of the world and moving forward in our journey.
Making It An Identity
As I have shared in the past, I feel one of these easy traps for our egos to fall back into when it comes to being spiritual is that we can begin to create an identity around the whole thing. For example, we might begin reading Eckhart Tolle books (which I love) or listening to various speakers online about this stuff and suddenly we feel like we have to dress totally different, talk differently, do new hobbies and ultimately change our lifestyle into something that resembles a “spiritual person.” The trouble with this is, just as we are learning to observe and go beyond ego, we turn around and begin fulfilling it on another end.
Now I’m not suggesting that by doing any of the above things as they happen naturally is wrong or anything, I’m merely pointing out the fact that it is quite common for us to give up who we are simply to create another identity that fits into what people would assume a spiritual person is like.
Going back to my example above, almost every time I have met someone in person who has read my stuff online, seen videos or documentaries I’ve been a part of, they are somewhat surprised with how, for lack of a better word, “normal” I am. Why is this? Am I supposed to fit some box? Sure I may dabble into things I’m led to or guided to out of interest but I don’t let things define me.
I’m not saying it’s wrong to do this, but to realize it for what it is, we go out of our way to look, sound and act spiritually but don’t actually apply anything we know.
Using “Spiritual Clarity” To Justify Behavior
Another big one is using some form of spiritual clarity or answer to create a reason or excuse for pretty much everything.
Similar to what can happen above, where the ego once again gets involved. It seems common that we might begin to use much of the clarity we are getting to cover up or pretend our challenges or “issues” aren’t real or are someone else’s fault.
For example, let’s say someone sits us down and has a talk with us about something that is being observed in our life. It could be say, a destructive habit. The person took the time to sit down and point something out to us so we can observe it and make an adjustment yet a common response instead is “what you see in me is just a reflection of you, therefore the issue is in you and not me.” Using this argument is often a way to deflect what is being brought forward simply because we don’t want to face it nor appear as though we have anything to work on.
Another common deflection or defensive statement can be simply claiming “everything is perfect” all the time. While what plays out as a whole in our lives in various circumstances can be perfect in a big picture sense, simply using the statement to never look at nor make adjustments on your own self simply holds up and delays your own growth and journey. In a sense we are spiritually bypassing our own growth for the sake of upholding ego. Example, someones actions might constantly be selfish or put others out, but instead of realizing this we might simply say “Well it’s a role I need to play for them so it’s okay.” Meanwhile we are fully aware of what we are causing in other people’s lives and are just not willing to face it.
The bottom line is, it’s really easy to start using spirituality or things we learn to not face or take responsibility for ourselves.
Law of Attraction & Positivity
This is another topic that I’ve touched upon in the past based on observations and my own journey. What we think about and intend to create in our lives does can have an impact on what happens in life… sometimes. What we often forget is that there are billions of other people on the planet right now that also impact what you are looking to create.
If you are looking to bring something into your life, it often requires more than just saying it out loud, writing it out or creating a vision board. Yes, there are some smaller things that will come into being simply from a thought, intention or something of that nature, but when we are after bigger things, it requires us to actually act or move forward with creating what we are looking for. Example, you want a new job with specific details, write it out, intend for it but then go out looking for it! It will come as you take the steps.
Another thing I see a lot is almost a fear surrounding the whole concept. If we think of something, say something out loud or write something down that isn’t of pure positivity or pure thought towards our intention, it’s as if we just attracted the complete opposite of that automatically. Which isn’t true at all.
For example, If I call a friend and say “Hey I might be late because there is usually a lot of traffic on the highway at 5PM so just giving you a heads up.” This does not mean I am suddenly attracting or aligning with the experience of traffic. There is simply a level of realism being recognized. Not to mention one of the most important things: more than your words or jokes you might tell, your intention behind what you are saying has a much greater impact on the energy that comes out.
If we are in a social setting playing a game and I jokingly say “ahh you fu*ker you just beat me!” The energy that might come from that and be felt by another is very different than if I said it with a serious tone and meant it. So remember, most of the time no one pollutes the room and suddenly created or emitted bad energy because they said a bad word, made a joke or was real about something. We don’t have ultimate power over what we create in all scenarios. We are part of a whole.
This also stems into the misunderstanding that we must go out of our way to be positive all of the time as well. From my experience, if you want to feel good, move forward and face your demons, focus on being open and neutral about things. See it for what it is and focus less on whether it’s a positive thing or a negative thing. It’s much less effortful, and my guess is you will feel a lot better trying not to obsess over polarities. Do not fear negativity or anything of that nature. Fearing it or needing to avoid it still creates a fearful energy.
To note: No, this does not mean I think rape is okay. Neutrality simply means being free of obsessing over judgement of something and instead using what you know and feel inside to know how to act in a situation. (i.e. we all know rape is not a great thing) For those that have done it, what is judging them going to do? Instead, help stop it from happening and attempt to assist the individual in not repeating but also finding out truly why they felt they did the act. Step in as true help, don’t stand on the side lines and call them every name under the sun, it does nothing. Throwing them in a small room will not rehabilitate them. We require better approaches, but that is a whole other story.
Free Spirited/Flow & Laziness
Being “free flowing” and “free spirited” in a sense has also been taken quite out of context I feel. There seems to be a demonization of any form of planning, setting dates, making commitments of any kind or having some level of structure. I feel this could be because the moment you do these things you suddenly have to take responsibility for yourself, but it’s tough to say entirely.
This may also relate to the point mentioned above about using spiritual lingo to avoid things about ourselves. When we can’t fit into even slight forms of structure or organization, or can’t ever commit to planning anything, it raises some form of anxiety or fear within ourselves that we don’t want to face. Easily being able to say “that’s against our nature to plan anything” or “only the ego cares about structure” shows our lack of understanding of what these concepts really mean and how we are meant to balance mind, body and soul in this world. Even most spiritual teachers address this issue but many don’t seem to pay attention to it.
The bottom line is, we live in a world of 7 billion people and it will inevitably take some structure, organization and planning to make any form of system work. We are given a mind and body to be able to balance all of it together. The mind is a great tool for us to utilize and when we demonize it or don’t get it clear, it’s easy to fall into the ideas we can create about simply being “beyond the need to please the mind” when really that’s not what it’s about at all.
Work with your struggles, develop the skills and habits of organizing your life to some degree. It’s only going to help ourselves and the world as a whole. We’re incredible beings, you think a little structure is impossible for us to learn?
Final Thoughts
By taking on and trying to be something or by not facing ourselves, we actually just create a whole other form of dogma and separation that we are trying to grow beyond to begin with. If we experienced this at all in our past or still do, IT’S OKAY! I believe it’s part of a journey of growing. We are constantly learning more about ourselves and it’s always another step forward.
Of course, this type of identity and separation exists any time we create ideas of ourselves whether it be religious, atheist, vegan or meat eater etc etc.
The key here is to just look at what is being done almost on purpose in order to fit into an idea. Observe and see how things might transform.
My philosophy is just be yourself. Don’t try to prove yourself as anything. Live your life, enjoy it and when you meet challenges, you work through them and gain more clarity, then ACT from that clarity. We can change the world without having to create new identities for ourselves. Remember, the empty can rattles the loudest.
Thank you for a great article. I share similar experiences with the stigma of being “spiritual” and I remember having some of the same thoughts and reflections that you described. I am usually very selective and modest in who I talk to about spiritual ideas, because there is so much misunderstanding about what they mean, and I don’t like people having pre-conceived ideas about who I am, and putting me in a clearly defined box/role. The strongest point here was that being spiritual to me is being open to life and responsive as well as flexible and understanding – it does not necessarily have to include Buddha figurines, or cutting off from society and living in the wilderness. It’s something for everyone, no matter who you are. Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing Alex. I can relate to you for sure. being put into boxes because of what others think of us at times is obviously out of our control but like you said, sometimes you have to be selective who you say things to. I didn’t like running an organization like this and seeing so many people put us into a certain box, was a bit frustrating. Which in a sense was a whole learning experience on its own, but still, breaking down the barriers is key 🙂
Even Buddha figured out that he needs to go back into society and live with people because it isn’t just about being enlightened. It is about living in this reality that we are in and exactly, walking the walk not just talking the talk.
Well done!
There were so many good points brought up by the author that it would take volumes to explore. But there are one or two thoughts that I would really like to comment upon.
1. “…where the ego once again gets involved…”.
Isn’t that the real crux of the problem? We desire to be a unified ONE yet we also desire to be our own singular ONE. That is, we want to be a part of a greater, magnificent, complete whole without sacrificing our own, special, individual identity. Everyone wants to be universal while still being unique. Strange and incompatible bedfellows indeed.
2. “…This may also relate to the point mentioned above about using spiritual lingo to avoid things about ourselves…”
Don’t we all do this? I am buzzed – he is drunk. I am honest – she is self righteous. I am firm – he is stubborn. etc., etc., etc., You will find people that have found the “secret truth” everywhere. The answer is singular to them. It can be Jesus or drugs or aerobics. They all have their own lingo: get saved, get high, get motivated…
3. “We are given a mind and body to be able to balance all of it together.”
Agreed – we are given these amazing gifts. But how many of us use them? Do I? Do you? Really, to the best of our capability? If so, why not? The capacity to do something does not always mean it will be done. And aren’t we all sinners here? So easy to give up, so easy to forget it, so easy to put the blame on you…
No one has found the limit of human power. I am trying to – give me 60 years
The word ‘spirit’ comes from the Latin ‘spiritus’ which means moving air, or breath: nothing more.
This word has now become virtually meaningless because too many people interpret whatever meaning it originally possessed in too many different ways. There is now no agreed meaning for this word.
My objection is that this word is deliberately being used to get people to ignore what is happening in the real world and focus – instead – on the nebulous, indefinable world of spirituality. The idea is to get people to become self-obsessed and introverted, to convince them it is all about their inner selves and that when they achieve some kind of spiritual awakening all will be well with the world. This is no different from telling people that their rewards will come in heaven – so get on with it and work like a dog in the meanwhile.
Well everything isn’t OK with the world. In fact, the world is going to hell in a hand cart. And one of the main reasons this is so is because too many of us are too busy contemplating our navels and ignoring what those that encourage to do precisely this: the warmongers with their massive media machine, can get on with their plans for us all unimpeded.
Wake up world.
Your thoughts are great. I have similar ones myself. Also, the Ultra spiritual video was a hoot. Keep at it. You are doing a great job….
I like your point about spiritual people appear to be living their ideas, but actually not. Some teachers don’t practise what they preach- no energetic integrity. Einstein said ‘ everything is energy’. So every thought, word and deed is important. What energy are we aligning to? We are all part of the whole.
Great article, really nailed the increasingly common misconceptions.
Thanks! I’ve just found it so tough to see the divides and how we want to make changes in this world yet we create these identities which form barriers and all of it is so unnecessary. Hopefully this helps to open each other up to not only accept one another but drop the un-genuine stuff.
This is a great read, Im glad im not the only person who thinks this way. i feel the only concrete detail “spirituality” should have is being ones self
Absolutely. I feel the openness that is required in exploring things is key and should not be given up as we explore new ideas that we even feel are solid within us. In each moment things can change for us and what we understand. Always growing.
“The empty can rattles the loudest.” I like that!
One of my favorite sayings lol
This was a GREAT article. Thankyou!
You’re welcome! 🙂
Wonderful article, I love the point you made regarding identity. I must laugh, when I took up Reiki years ago..I thought: “I should do Yoga, it will intensify my ‘Chi’ channeling abilities.” lol, which led me to becoming a Yoga Teacher and eventually an artist as well! Sometimes those notions of how the journey should look can inspire, however I’ve found myself loosening those perceptual constructs a bit over time. They created certain imbalances in me, I became far to stiff in my ‘wrong’ vs ‘right’ approach. It caused me to become far to isolated in a sense, which too was a part of the journey.
<3
Thanks for sharing your story on that one. It’s comical what goes through our minds sometimes isn’t it? Great thing is you see it all and have moved beyond it which is a great part of the journey! I think we’ve all gone through it in some way.
Hey nice article Joe! I really appreciated this one. Keep up the good work homie.
Your welcome Ben! It was something I’ve wanted to get across for a while now 🙂
be one of the few and not one of the many
DO what you know
the injunction: man know thyself, is still aplicable today
This is an excellent, intelligent article and the video at the end was ultra funny! Thanks for creating.
I like what you’re trying to do and agree about the “spiritual” label. I do think, however, that sometimes writers on this site present themselves as experts rather than explorers and that puts me off.
One who was enlightened finding own way is named buddha and followers are simply known Monks. No organized effort works. Yes there are spiritual markets where they try to sell spiritualism but ultimately a capitalistic effort. The real journey begins when outer doors of body are closed mindfully.
EXCELLENT ARTICLE! Would you like to traslate it into Spanish?. I could give you a hand on that if you want.
the self is God and rules over your universe God is the source of Love, the ego is the source of strife We choose the voice we listen to. Love is the answer
.
awesome! you cleared up a lot of the “joking” aspect of the law of attraction. for me i always thought that maybe my jokes, being as real as they are, needed to cease because i was possibly emitting a non spiritual energy. which also correlates to not being labeled or putting my OWN SELF into a box
Yes the entire NEW age movement is a complete joke with so many self-proclaimed teachers attempting to make a carer out of something they know nothing about and are unable to walk their talk. It has opened up a whole can of catchphrase conceptual dogma like “live in the moment”, and “it’s all good.” It’s sad because the road to hell is certainly paved with the best of intentions. Reading spiritual books will take you farther from the truth because spirit cannot be brought into form, period..There are so many idiotic self proclaimed “healers” who once experienced a glimpse of a higher dimension and somehow suddenly believe they are the “special” and anointed ones who the entire universe revolves around. I have personally met “Charles Almighty” himself as well as so many other New age ass-clowns who honestly believe they are the soul source of this creation.. They are so powerless that their need for self aggrandizement becomes epically astonishing.. It’s so much of a pathetic joke I finally tuned out completely.. 2012, bullshit galore, follow the money.. That being said there is a real need for PURE consciousness training that has nothing to do with new age garbage as the difference between two have been completely mistaken.
Did I mention I met 3 different people ( in less than one year’s time) that all claimed to have been THE Oriacle of Delphi? They all claimed they had full recall of that lifetime.. AND when I mentioned the others, they insisted they were the original and the others were imposters.. I am not making this up, I can name names, these are real people I know..
Totally the same thoughts I have had over the past few years. I would say that it is easy to start using the New Age or ‘spirituality’ in a similar way as people use religion to comfort, support and to not take responsibility over their lives. So it really does depend on the person and people are looking for rules and teachers when really it is all about your relationship with YOU and being honest about it.
Also, we must not forget that we are here on Earth to learn and experience life in this material reality, so while being ‘spiritual’ is great, it is absolutely true that we should still make commitments, have structure, ambition, goals etc etc etc because we must live a broad and interesting life in this reality in order to get thrown into situations where we learn. So if you only focus on the spirituality of everything without actually participating in society, you are missing the opportunities to learn your lessons in life. This is something I myself have definitely struggled with because everything around me seems to be so silly and pointless that I just can’t seem to find anyone who would see the world in a similar way as I do.
And finally, about the ego tricking with spirituality. I asked a yoga teacher about this after a great satsang and he told me that this is one of the big questions. How do you know if you are truly listening to your intuition or if it is your ego trying to mask some insecurity with the mask of ‘spirituality’?
Anyway, thanks for a good article!
I really appreciate this article because it points out the need for an actualized spirituality that so many of us are lacking. While many of us like to pretend we are living in accordance to our “purpose”, so many of us are still guided by our ego-ic needs. More often than not, I encounter “spiritual” people who fail to realize the responsibility that comes with looking within. Looking within does not mean confronting the parts of you that are easy, but rather it means confronting your complete self. It is another common occurrence that the “most spiritual” seem to have an issue being the “most real” – in other words, there is a fear that many individuals have about addressing anything negative. But being spiritual means being accepting of life as it is – and there are negative qualities to this life. Addressing life as it is presented to us is imperative for a fully-realized reality (true spirituality).
When we are challenging ourselves day by day to be better versions of who we are, then we will see ourselves become open to the truth – and the truth is that we are ever-evolving non-perfect beings. And we never need to be perfect. Instead, the only thing we “need” to be is accepting… compassionate… and grounded. Thanks for the article.
go be productive, expend all earth’s resources and move on to Mars
I believe your points are valid, however I do not in anyway believe that a “spiritual movement can be counter-productive”. These believed malfunctions are minor at best.
Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism by Chogyam Trungpa addresses this issue clearly.

I appreciate this article! It articulates a lot of what I’ve felt recently and resonates with my journey on the spiritual path. I’m coming to a place where I see that my spiritual “inner” work is nothing if it doesn’t harmonize me and energize me to manifest true peace and true sustainability and true love on the physical plane. And that requires using structure, and discipline, and commitment, and sweat, and tears. The old structures have to give way to new, consciously, intentionally planned structures. In my experience, it is much easier for me to “flow” within a sound and respected structure.
Being my Self means facing and responding to life with authenticity and heart and an “all in” fully present mentality.
Thank you for your work here at CE. I whole heartedly appreciate you following and exploring your Truth and being willing to grow and change through your explorations and experiences. 🙂
Great article. Nailed it!
I find that westerners are more conscious of what they are and what they should be – sign of really civilized people. They want to develop spiritually; but sadly, their spirituality is of a superficial nature. This brand of spirituality has been taught by people like J.Krishnamurty and numerous self-improvement gurus. Self-improvement starts with correcting our mental tendencies; but spirituality does not end there, nor can conscious self-improvement do everything that is needed to be spiritually perfect. Meditation does more than what we can do consciously. It is the greatest purifier of mind. But unless we restrain our mind to some extent and regulate our behavior, we will not be able to make progress in meditation. Thus, conscious self-improvement and meditation should go side by side, meditation playing a greater role in the process.
We have three bodies – gross, subtle and causal. Our mental tendencies are in the subtle body. We have to go beyond our three bodies by meditation. Transcending subtle and causal bodies are such dramatic experiences that they cannot be missed when they occur. After that only we experience our Pure Self or Soul. This Self-Experience removes all our deficiencies and weaknesses and makes us as perfect and blissful as God Himself (minus His powers only); because individual Soul is a part of collective Soul known as God, Brahman or all-pervading-Consciousness. Till this happens, we must be careful not to hurt others, not behave dishonestly, not get involved in activities that may disturb our mind during our meditation sessions, and keep meditating regularly, sincerely and diligently. Rest will happen by itself. It takes time and needs patience and strong commitment for the final spiritual goal. And goal must be understood clearly, that it is not merely developing some mental qualities but becoming free from imperfect bodies & mind and experiencing the perfect Soul which is of the same nature as God, Brahman or all-pervading-Consciousness. That is why it is called God-Realization also. That only makes us supremely happy.

Great article! It is important to remember that the reason we are doing all of this is to create and experience MORE love, MORE happiness and MORE joy. Not to pin-point eveything that is “wrong”.
Check out this article and video as well!

Love this article. If spirituality separates us from others, we are not balanced with it. Spiritual elevation isn’t an entitlement to correct or escape the feelings of others. We could ask ourselves “What would Jesus… Buddha… Ghandi… Yoganada… do?” But not “how would they pronounce their own superiority?”
I came into this post thinking “if you’re talking about spirituality being unPRODUCTIVE, you’re not understanding spirituality”
But reading your article – I agree with every point you made. You separate the true spirituals from the kids who just tripped too hard and think everything is connected because they heard it from some hippy
Terms like spirituality, god, bible, religion, all those terms carry HUGE stigmas now that make it incredibly hard for someone who uses those tools in a positive way to be recognized as different than the crazy people using these tools to further their own agendas.
One must remember that we are naturally spiritual creatures. To reach spirituality easily, one must reconnect with their true nature. While means holarity. The first humans had no concept of good or evil, there was just life – survival, moving forward. To repress negativity is to ignore part of yourself – and one must accept every aspect of themselves to even experience anything remotely spiritual
The biggest issue is that people who don’t truly believe in spirituality will never experience something as amazing, as opening, as reality breaking as some spiritual experiences. You must believe in it for it to come true – and even if it doesn’t come to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
In the future, as I learn more, I am planning on setting up a “Religion” of my own, one that doesn’t pass down metaphorical lessons, but rather key ideas/mindsets to help people experience spirituality on their own. The largest problem in religion is that most don’t actually understand the TRUE meanings behind the metaphorical stories – I want to pass something down that can’t be misinterpreted, so that everyone can connect with themselves and experience their own level of spirituality – to bring them to their own visions, to make everyone a prophet.
